Project Effectiveness and Learning
The effectiveness of my anti-bullying campaign, despite the in-class modification, was strong because of its key components and the lessons I learned:
SAP Lady's Presentation: I believe this was the most effective component. By securing a representative from the South African Police Service (SAP), I added critical authority and credibility to the message. The presentation provided essential information on the legal repercussions of bullying and gave learners clear avenues for seeking help.
In-Class Format: Although it wasn't the original plan, the in-class delivery was successful because it created a more focused and intimate setting. I realised this format may have made learners feel more comfortable sharing experiences or asking sensitive questions compared to a large, public assembly.
My Learning Experience: I learned the crucial importance of adaptability and contingency planning in project execution. I gained hands-on experience coordinating with external stakeholders (like the SAP) and managing logistics when unexpected issues arose.
Impact on School/Community: My campaign successfully raised awareness and delivered tangible resources to the learner body. I feel this significantly contributed to fostering a safer, more supportive school environment and strengthened the community link between the school and law enforcement.
Personal Transformation through Service-Learning
Service-learning changed me personally in several key ways:
Increased Empathy: Working directly on the issue of bullying deepened my understanding of the emotional distress victims’ face and the underlying issues driving the behaviour of perpetrators.
Sense of Civic Responsibility: I moved past simply caring about the issue to becoming an active contributor to the solution. I developed a greater sense of duty to improve my immediate community.
Boost in Confidence: Successfully planning and executing the campaign, especially handling the last-minute change in venue, significantly enhanced my self-efficacy and my belief in my ability to manage complex tasks.
Enhanced Interpersonal Skills: I had to communicate clearly and professionally with learners, teachers, and the SAP representative, which greatly improved my ability to manage diverse relationships and convey important, sensitive messages.
Professional Development: Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes
The experience was invaluable for my professional development, providing me with practical knowledge, skills, and new attitudes:
New Knowledge
Social Issues and Policy: I gained a better understanding of bullying dynamics, its psychological impact, and the legal frameworks/resources (provided by the SAP) available to address it.
Project Management: I acquired practical knowledge of event logistics, scheduling, and risk management by having to quickly adapt to the required format change.
New Skills
Adaptability and Problem-Solving: My ability to quickly pivot the strategy when the format changed demonstrated resilience and effective, on-the-spot problem-solving.
Stakeholder Engagement: The skill of recruiting, communicating with, and managing a high-profile guest (the SAP lady) is a crucial professional asset I gained.
Communication & Presentation: I refined my ability to deliver a clear, persuasive anti-bullying message to the learner audience and to coordinate professionally with adults.
New Attitudes
Proactive Mind set: I developed an attitude of initiative, seeing a problem and immediately taking steps to design and implement a solution.
Commitment to Quality: My drive to ensure the campaign was successful, even with logistical setbacks, reflects a strong dedicated and accountable work ethic.
Openness to Feedback: Evaluating the success and challenges of the project has instilled an attitude of continuous improvement and learning.
Benefit to the School and Sustainability
Benefit to the School
The main benefit of this initiative to the school is its contribution to a safer and more respectful atmosphere.
Improved School Climate: By tackling bullying head-on, I helped the school reinforce its commitment to learner welfare, improving the overall learning environment.
Resource Connection: The event provided learners and staff with a direct, practical link to an external authority (the SAP) for assistance with serious issues, strengthening the school’s support infrastructure.
Empowerment: I empowered learners with the knowledge and tools necessary to identify, report, and confront bullying behaviour, fostering peer accountability.
Sustainability
I recognise that a single event has limits, so I reflected on the initiative's sustainability:
Weaknesses (Current): As a one-off event, the impact on behaviour might diminish over time without follow-up.
Recommendations for Sustainability: For the project to last, I would recommend:
Resource Dissemination: Ensuring the crucial information shared by the SAP is formalised. For example, printed, posted permanently on school notice boards as an accessible, lasting resource.
Learner-Led Program: Establishing an on-going peer mentorship or anti-bullying club to keep the conversation and momentum going.
Curriculum Integration: Advocating for the school to integrate anti-bullying discussions into relevant subject curricula on a recurring basis.
